Introduction

This page is the gateway to the various cellular automata I have written over the years. The original one was written using Microsoft's Visual Java 1.0 (I've deleted this). I've left a link to the second, written in Sun JDK 1.2.2, in case anyone has an ancient browser that still runs it (mine doesn't).

More recently I have re-written the 1D automaton in Javascript using the canvas element and created some new 2D applications. Click on one of the panels below to navigate.

1D - Five colours

A five colour one dimensional automata. Here time is represented as the second dimension to create the two dimensional images. The pattern evolves from top to bottom, the next state of a cell depending on its current state and the states of its two immediate neighbours.

1D - Six colours

A six colour one dimensional automata, this is essentially the same as the five colour automaton in the previous link, only with more colours.

2D - Forest Fire

A forest Fire simulator. This is a real 2D automaton, with the patterns changing over time.

This is really one for sitting and watching and snapshots don't do it justice, so I haven't included any.

2D - Game of Life

Conway's famous "Game of Life". The image above arises if you run the default starting configuration on the "large" square grid.

2D - Five Colour Version

A two dimensionaly analogue of the 1D version introduced earlier. Not the image is naturally 2D and time is represented using animation.
