St. Malo 2004 - Beach and Fort National

Once we'd dumped our luggage and had a brief rest set off for the beach. Our hotel was only about 50 yards from the front so the beach was quite convenient. At least the near bit was, there are about 4 miles of beach to play with. The weather was overcast and the beach almost deserted.

map.jpg Here's a map of the beaches. The one nearest our hotel is "Plage du Sillon".

And here it is.

These two pictures should join up, the lower one on the right.

If you follow the beach West you come to the Intra Muros, where there is a land bridge (at low tide) to Fort National. This is a small fort on a rocky outcrop. The image shows a building inside the walls. I think this is a modern reconstruction as the original was blown up in WW2. You get some good views from the fort.

There is also a dungeon, through this door.

After the fort we retired to the bar.
st_vincent_glass_3.jpg St. Vincents Cathedral was pretty much destroyed during WW2. The current building retains some original features but is mostly new. An exhibition inside the cathedral shows some images from before and during the destruction. This is the stained glass window above the sanctuary.
