Torre dello Ziro

You can see the Torre dello Ziro from Amalfi, high up on a hill. We decided to try and walk there. We didn't get off to a very auspicious start as the "road" we were looking for turned out to be a narrow staircase between two buildings.

Some scenery.

After wandering the back allies of Amalfi for a while we eventually found the main route up the mountain. You can just make out Alex (nearer) and Justin in the distance. This section of the path passed under a rather large overhanging cliff. I didn't see much evidence of recent cliff falls so I guess these cliffs are quite stable.

Looking back at Amalfi.

A panorama taken from the hilltop looking East. I'm sure I took the two photos with exactly the same settings (I have a manual camera) but they came out very different. I think my scanner tries to do some clever tricks. I've managed to readjust them so that the clash isn't too bad but you can still see the join.

I think this is Atrani, the next town along from Amalfi. They are quite close together, separated by a headland, but the stairs and passages of the two towns appear to merge seamlessly.

Looking back towards Amalfi and our hotel. The boats in the bottom left corner are in Amalfi harbour. Our hotel is between the first and second set of cliffs you can see before you get to the real mountains. Pogerola is at the top right hand end of the first cliff. Our hotel might be the building at the bottom left end of the second cliff, we were certainly very close to this cliff.

The "Torre dello Ziro". This is as close as we got. When we started out it looked like quite a climb. The route (out of the guide) actually took us a lot higher and round the back of the ridge and approached the tower from the far side. It wasn't easy relating the paths to those in the guide and you couldn't see the tower from anywhere on the walk except for the start and this point, which was on a hilltop a few hundred feet higher. We didn't bother making the descent, which involved backtracking quite a long way and then taking a lower path.

Back in Amalfi.
